Do It For A Cause: Poplar Bluff Family Worship Center

Earlier this month, the community of Poplar Bluff once again showed what makes Southeast Missouri so special—neighbors helping neighbors when it matters most.

The team at Family Worship Center organized a heartfelt fundraiser to support a local family who experienced a devastating setback after hiring a roofing company that took payment but never completed the work. Unfortunately, the company also closed its doors before finishing the job—leaving the family with both financial loss and an incomplete roof.

But in true SEMO fashion, their church community stepped in to help ease their loss.

When Community Becomes the Safety Net

Situations like this are incredibly difficult—but they also highlight the power of local connection and support systems.

Through fundraising efforts, encouragement, and outreach, the congregation at Family Worship Center has come together to help this family rebuild—not just their home, but their peace of mind.

This is exactly what the “Do It For A Cause” series is all about—spotlighting the real people and organizations making a difference across our communities.

⚠️ Contractor Fraud Is More Common Than You Think

For homeowners in and around Butler County and surrounding areas, stories like this serve as both:

  • A reminder to stay cautious
  • And a powerful example of community resilience

At Borrowed Time Real Estate, we don’t just help people buy and sell homes—we aim to be a trusted local resource for everything that comes with homeownership. If you need recommendations, please reach out to someone in our office.

How to Protect Yourself When Hiring a Contractor

If you’re planning repairs or renovations, here are a few smart, protective steps:

✔️ 1. Get Multiple Bids

Always compare at least 2–3 contractors before making a decision.

✔️ 2. Verify Licensing & Insurance

Check with your local municipality or state resources to confirm legitimacy.

✔️ 3. Avoid Large Upfront Payments

The Federal Trade Commission recommends paying in stages as work is completed.

✔️ 4. Get Everything in Writing

Contracts should clearly outline scope, timeline, and payment terms.

✔️ 5. Hire Local When Possible

Local contractors are easier to verify and more accountable within the community.
